Success! Three months after the Schenectady County Legislature
approved a local law to prohibit the sale or offering for sale of
any children’s beverage containers that contain Bisphenol A (BPA), I
received an invitation from Senator Charles Schumer’s office to join
him for a press conference on the issue. I was honored to join
Senator Schumer in the City of Troy, where he unveiled his proposed
legislation to ban BPA. Schumer said in a statement that BPA poses
major health risks, especially to children. Similar to the bill I
introduced in Schenectady County earlier this year, his bill would
also prohibit BPA in products marketed to kids age 3 and under. I
was happy to hear the news from Senator Schumer’s office and that
Schenectady County was able to play a role in bring the issue to the
next level.

The leaders of the Schenectady County
Legislature finally announced that they will to join
with me to ban BPA in Schenectady County. Although they
re-introduced the bill through the Health Committee with
virtually no changes to my original wording, the fact
remains, that this was never a political issue, but an
issue of child safety. Good government isn’t about who
takes the credit, it’s about doing right by the people
who put us in office. I look forward to working with all
of the legislators to pass this measure in a timely
manner and continuing our cooperative efforts on future
proposals for the betterment of our residents.”
